Nicole Barrett is a vibrant and engaging practitioner who easily connects with people from the boardroom through to frontline operations. She is 'big picture' and outrageously creative, yet works from the basis that innovative strategy development and improvement interventions must be founded on rigorous analysis and research so that investment decisions and actions are purposeful and valued by her clients. Nicole's career in organisational psychology was sparked by an interest in anthropology which led her to specialise in leadership, culture and group dynamics occurring in the workplace. She is a strategic thinker, proficient planner and project manager of multidisciplinary teams. Her reputation is based on her ability to work from the conceptual through to solution design and delivery of quality outcomes.
After heading up her private practice for 10 years, Nicole took the opportunity to work with a consulting firm to the infrastructure industry. This role saw Nicole assigned to major commercial development, water, rail and road projects, both in Australia and overseas. Nicole then accepted the role of Senior Culture Consultant for Origin Energy, working with leaders through to frontline operations in Australia, New Zealand and PNG. This experience further developed her perspective on the realities of operating in complex organisations and served to strengthen her consultancy practice.
Nicole's industry experience includes education, tourism, hospitality, oil and gas, telecommunications, manufacturing, infrastructure, construction, engineering, local and state government, professional services, not for profits, energy, banking, and aviation. She has successfully led many culture transformation projects where the accurate diagnosis of the current state and her work to align and develop committed leadership teams have been key contributors to the realisation of measurable business benefits. In more recent years Nicole developed a keen interest and specialised in the area of safety culture where she designed and delivered a longitudinal research program which is recognised as leading practice in terms of method, rigor and results. For example, her work with Contact Energy led to targeted interventions with measurable performance improvements year on year and the client received the Deloitte Energy Excellence Award for their 'changing culture' initiative (2016). Nicole has replicated her safety culture improvement program with similar clients in the energy industry.
Nicole is committed to lifelong learning and continues to shape her knowledge and development journey. She is ICAM accredited to lead safety investigations and has access to many restricted psychological tests and tools such as PRISM Brain Mapping, the 16PF, MLQ and MBTI. She is a registered psychology supervisor and mentor for Queensland universities as well as a recognised speaker and author of our Insights Blog. In 2015, Nicole presented her safety culture research at the ISPSO Conference held in Rome, Italy (ISPSO AM2015 Researching and Transforming Safety Culture Nicole Barrett.pdf). In 2017, Nicole 'shined the light on culture' at the Leading Now Summit and in 2018 she led a master class on ‘coaching for impactful leadership of change' at Melbourne's Convergence Change Management Conference. Nicole continues to guest lecture Masters students of Griffith University on a periodic basis.
